Hey Friday!!! Hey March!!! Happy New Day, Happy New Month. For whatever reason this past week has been a trip! Some planet out there is doing the most and taking everyone for a g-damn spin! Anywho… with a new month there is soooo much going on in Jozi. I’ve tried my best to consolidate a good mix of what to do.

Friday, 1 March:

The Bioscope Cinema stays bringing the films that you didn’t know you wanted to see. Besides the quite intense and emotional Oscars Nominated Shorts I saw last week, I also saw This Is Congo and was introduced to a whole other understanding of the political and social state of the mineral rich country. Today they bring back Everything Must Fall a local film looking at the #FeesMustFall movement that started from a protest against the cost of education and became even more politically and socially charged than ever anticipated. Check it out from today until Thursday. [1-7 Mar, R50]

Untitled Basement doesn’t look like it’s slowing down with hosting amazing local acts – and we’re here for it. Last night was jazz from Bokani Dyer’s next week is Urban Village, but most importantly tonight they host my fave electronic slash dance slash experimental wowness, Nonku Phiri. So there! [1 Mar, 8PM R120]

I’ve never heard of this film fest before – but now I do! The Rapid Lion International Film Festival starts today at The Market Theatre. This particular fest run until the 10th and brings the best of African, African Diaspora and BRICS produced films all in one place. Have a close look at the schedule and lockdown the titles that speak to you. [1 – 10 March, Opening night 630PM R30 – R45]

For a bit of a flashback party night, KCB and Jazzuelle host their monthly dance and electronica party called Dark Disco tonight from 8 at Kitcheners. [1 Mar, 8PM R50]

Saturday, 2 March:

On it’s 6th running year and first edition for 2019, The Soweto Arts & Craft Fair will be held at Soweto Theatre this Saturday. Live music, local artists and fresh emerging creative talent, unique shopping and fun areas for children. Samthing Soweto, SORRY and Ginger Nkosi to perform throughout the day. [2 Mar, 12AM-7PM R20]

Urban Backpackers has a great daytime POPUP party happening at the Urban Zulu Rooftop on Anderson Street in the CBD. I went to the December Edition and it was tons of fun with really great DJs and dope views of the city. [2 Mar, 3-10PM R60/R80]

The Bioscope is bringing back it’s popular Late Night Arcade tomorrow night at The Birdhouse rooftop venue. And yes… it’s a whole night of new-school and old-school gaming on all sorts of cool arcades. Expect some VR gaming and an outdoor cinema. [2 Mar, 5-12PM R100]

Simphiwe Dana fans will be happy to know (if you don’t already of course) that she will be at the Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City for her Annual Congregation concert tomorrow. 15 years since her debut this show should be quite something. [2 Mar, 8-11PM R250]

Sunday, 3 March:

First Sundays is very much a thing in Joburg. Depending on what vibe you’re looking for you have many options to choose from. Lebo’s Backpackers hosts it’s First Sundays in the form of the Locrate Market in Soweto. Free Entry to their open park with live performances, food, art and clothing stalls as you’d expect at a daytime market. [3 Mar, 11AM-6PM]

From South to East, Victoria Yards has it’s Open Studio First Sundays where all artisans, food stores, gin distillery and local artists will open their spaces to the public. The local community will also have their fresh produce on sale as part of the community upliftment project at the yards. [3 Mar, 10AM-3PM]

Melville has their own First Sundays throughout the whole suburb where all the restaurants, stores, cocktail and wine bars stay open extra late. Food and drinks specials and even performances will be the order of the day bringing Sunday-Funday energy to the streets. [3 Mar, 12am-12pm]

Koolin In The City is one of my favourite day into night Sunday parties always with the best of local talent and upcoming hip hop talent and household DJs. This time around they have traded in the rooftop in the CBD to the historic Cosmopolitan in Maboneng. This edition sees Stogie T as the main act with many others to hit the stage. I’m really excited to see how this new venue lends itself to KITC. [3 Mar, 2-11PM R100]

I know it’s a lot, but we are slowly creeping out of Summer into Autumn so go out and enjoy the city. Be sure to follow @FOMOFridaysJHB on Instagram for live story updates on events.
