Oh yea we in this bitch!! Whew. Is it me or did this week draaag. Apart from having a 2 day hangover (I know, I know. Do we ever learn?) I had writing classes which god bless them are the absolute best, but can be taxing. The imagination needs constant stimulation I tell ya. Definitely a daily practice of finding those stimulants from now on. Hope you had a good one though. Let’s get it in.

Watching:

Like I said. Week was a toughie, so the watching was on the minimum. I listened more than anything. Easier medium tbh. Omg. All I watched was a movie called The Invitation on Netflix on Sunday. It was one of those situations where you have no clue what mood you’re in so you go through titles, watch like 20 minutes and then realise you just can’t. Invitation had all the intrigue and creepy suspense. I think I liked it. Ending was NUTS!

That’s all.

Listening:

Yes, yes… More Super Soul Conversations with Mama O. They are my daily bread at this point. We don’t always have these conversations or even share our beliefs in divinity, energies/vibrations and the shit that makes us great. SSC is always a great input and outlet for just that. This week I listened to the one with Dr Phil about accountability, responsibility and forgiveness. Fave line: You can only control YOU. Others you can inspire, others you can coach, others you can coax. A-ha. Amen. Hallelu. Overindulged with Marianne Williamson on her chat about returning to love. Simple and powerful. Also her daily prayers are the ones!

Music wise I pretty much allowed Spotify to guide me through my daily mixes. This week has been a lot of dark pop from The Japanese House, Shura and the likes. Yummy new age alternative vibes from Blood Orange, Broods and Kelela. These artist know how to write great pop songs.

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

I’m not even gonna front. As much as I wanna r-e-s-t this weekend, I know I’m gonna pop off at some point. Tonight M.I.A. is in town and performing at The Newtown Music Factory (old Bassline – thank God they are using that space!). She’ll be supported by some faves – Doo Wap, Dear Ribane, Phatstoki and Buli. A tour-de-femme of artists and performers. Obsessed! I cannot wait.

44 Stanley is doing a Friday Nights at 44. Never been to one but I guess they will have all the stores open. Nice cosy fire spots and music flowing through the whole space. My Friday is gonna be anything but mellow, but if you’re into it this sounds like a good one.

Encounters Documentary Film Festival is still on going at The Bioscope. I’ll be checking out M.I.A’s doccie film there on Saturday. Be sure not to miss it. Ayanda Mabulu opened his latest exhibition at Kalshnikovv last night at First Thursdays. Didn’t manage to get a peep because it was so crowded but will go check it out. Looked liked a lot was going on in there. Think I saw Nelson Mandela doing the Nazi salute in one piece. Go see it!

Blvck Queer is hosting the Vibrate Higher Social Festival at Soweto Theatre on Saturday. Art, live music and panel discussions will be the order of the day to promote artists and entrepreneurs. I’m doing the Field Market at some point and probs will pop into VHSF. Never been to either so should be a god excursion.

La Santa Muerte is having this dope party where you can (read MUST) come in any alter ego of your choosing. Fur coats, french maids, blingy pimps and and and. Sounds like my type of party. I got wigs and stockings for days! Overcoats and Underwear will be a vibe.

I don’t have any Sunday situations on my radar so do hit me up. KCB has their standing karaoke jam Khona Karaoke Sundays. Hot DJs and of course the Japanese art form of singing to words on a screen. Love.

Happy Friday peeps!

I can’t believe it’s Friday again. This week has been shorter for me but physically felt long af. I like things but sometimes tend to forget my introverted and empath ways. Bushfire was all the things but I was drained shem. Officially bounced back today though. Let’s do drinks!!

JOKES! Here we go…

Watching:

Been on that Netflix this week.. big surprise. Apart from re-watching all of Chewing Gum with my cousins on Monday (there’s something so fun about watching people experience a show you love for the first time), I got hooked onto Netflix’s new docuseries Explained. It’s no more than 20 so minutes long and freely goes into various topics of this world like; monogamy – it’s history and it’s relevance today, making designer babies through DNA manipulation and the effects that slavery still has on black folk in America. It’s very well produced and gets to the point with sharp visuals and interviews. They really should make a podcast version of the show, it could be equally enjoyed in just audio. Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt is BACK! The fallible gang in NYC has returned and they are trying they’re luck at adulting for another season. I’m only one episode in, but it’s a fave. Tina Fey can do no wrong in my eyes. Those characters!! Oh and Netflix is releasing the episodes in batches so don’t stress about the missing eps.

Besides TV – Coconut Kelz is telling it like she sees it (obvs in her car) in a new video. She’s coming for Euse-bias, trying to get in with the DA and questioning Siya Kolisi’s captaining. Riot as always! I can’t! Remember when I told you I was jamming to Mx Blouse‘s song Is’phukphuku on repeat (still am tbh), well the visuals are out and it’s a fave! Lewks on lewks! Dope choreo. The whole vibe nje is a mood. Hashtag Queer Domination!

Listening:

Th music festival gave me all the musical life so I didn’t really listen to much this week. Listening to Salif Keita‘s Anthology album as I type this post. So good! So necessary. When I’m done with this post I need to hunt down the line up from Bushfire and follow all those artists. Some really great finds I could defs be into..

Obvs I had to get my life with Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations podcast, as I do every week. Her sit down with Amy Schumer was hella deep and made me like the funny girl a whole lot more. She is so candid! She gets to say “bitch” in front of Oprah. Imagine. It kind of inspired me to do a separate post on what they talk about. We’ll see…

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

So I’m not sure what this weekend holds for me (on account of being drained) but there are a few goodies going on in Jozi. Party wise, KCB (Kitcheners) has an insane lineup of my absolute faves at their Bitch Slap party tomorrow. I may be tempted because I’ve never with this line-up of Lelowhatsgood, Maria McCloy, Little Miss Kay and Your Uncle Gary. Hashtag Femme Power! La Santa Muerte in Melville is having their 90s party called Spice Up Your Life! This spot has become a fave, and the vibe is always good. They better play Spice Girls! If you go, send me a video if they do play my gals.

There is a Botanical Art Worldwide Exhibition at Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank all weekend. So if you like plants and plants like you back (in no order), then check this one out. Rosebank has their Sunday Market and every first Sunday of the month the Locrate Market is in Soweto around Lebo’s Backpackers. Hopefully the weather allows. I’m keen on a new market vibe with hopefully some different food trucks. They always tend to be the same. Don’t forget it’s First Thursdays next week. Braam has Kalashnikovv Gallery, Once backpackers, Anotomy for She Said So and 99 Juta. Rosebank has the one stop shop of Keyes Art Mile and surrounding galleries in the area.

Encounters Documentary Film Festival is back this year at The Bioscope Cinema and at the Rosebank Nouveau. It runs until the 10th. This could be a great mellow solo Friday sitch actually. Check out the schedule here.

OK that’s it gang. Links are added for times, venues and the videos I’ve mentioned. Go wild. It’s June after all!

Happy Friday!

I’m back in full swing! Fully re-integrated into society and loving it. I somehow managed to survive a full 5 day working week. How did we do it gang? The public holiday fiesta is sadly over. Sigh. Looking forward to a nice mellow weekend though.

We all know it’s Mothers Day on Sunday and this used to be a particularly hard day for me. Since seeing the medium it’s gotten a whole lot better knowing my mom is good where she’s at and showering me with blessings. You lot must have a good one with your beautiful mamas, they truly are everything! ❤

Ok let’s do what we came here for!

Watching:

Now that I’m back to being a social beast again I’ve barely watched much. I’ve been between Netflix and Showmax. I checked out Maya Angelou’s amazing doccie ‘Still I Rise‘. She’s featured in the film and shares her life from growing up in the racist American South to becoming an esteemed writer and poet who also sings, dances, acts and directs! She’s been lit. Like last week I stumbled upon another crazy animation that’s on Showmax called Animals. It’s an HBO show so you know it’s a strangely dark and hilarious mess. If you like talking animals who sort of act like people; like incestuous gay cats, clubbing sex crazed rats and steroid pumping pigeons… Ya gotta watch this show! I’m obviously hooked.

Listening:

I’ve mostly been listening to podcasts this week. Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations have been my daily bread. I guess I’m craving inspiration and a sense of greater thinking. You can blame the Burn. It’s been great hearing about other people’s struggles, triumphs and philosophies on life. RuPaul’s What’s The Tee is a constant. They have the best guests from Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton to the outrageous Tituss Burgess from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. If anyone has a stash of great local content on podcasts please let me know. I only ever see radio show recordings. Doesn’t seem like a thing here yet. Music wise nothing much really. Just jamming to Christina Aguilera‘s new singles and patiently waiting for her first album release in 6 years coming in June. Finally! That last abum was a forgettable mess.

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

Been craving this weekend after an entire 5 day week! What’s the word Jo-hannes-burg?! I have a medium to busy af weekend. Today has has two things on my radar. After work drinks for sure, and the fact that Batuk are launching their new album Kasi Royalty tonight at The Tennis Club! Discovered this crazy and fun group, which includes Spoek Mathambo, at Bushfire one year and loved their whole flavour. So will defs pop in for a razzle there.

Saturday will probably have the regular brunching and crunching in catch ups and sunsets. Episode JHB has their last rooftop party (Episode Five) before full blown winter hits from 4pm at Negritude African Emporium. DJs, city views, good times for sundowners me thinks. The Nirox Winter Sculpture Fair is now labelled as the American Express Winter Fair. Seems to be getting bigger each year for them to land this sponsorship. This year sees Dr Esther Mahlangu (that’s right! Dr!) collaborating on some art works and international artist Yoko Ono who I think has works she’s been travelling with. Are they collaborating? The fair is on Saturday and Sunday at Nirox, I’m going Sunday. I don’t think there will be tickets at the door, so come correct if you’re into this vibe.

Sunday will have a ton of Mother’s Day things. I saw that Bioscope is having a whole day of movie screenings of some faves including Mermaids with Cher, Winona and Christina Ricci. Check their FB for times. It’s just Nirox for me, so let me know if anything else is happening in the city.

Events have links to the FB events for times and venue info. Be sure to comment below so we all know what’s good. Take it easy. Keep it breezy!

Whew! Ok… I’m slowly getting back into it. Today’s post is hella late my morning was riddled with doing weekly stats for that 9 to 5. Last night I managed to go to two galleries yesterday for First Thursdays… it was a lot. Still on that post-burn funk. Glad I did it though, had great conversations and ideas for some stuff I’m working on for y’all.

I’ve been sick this week so all I did was watch stuff on Netflix for hours on end. I’m nowhere near finishing the book I started at the burn and zero new music, but let’s do this thing.

Watching:

As I said it was all Netflix, all day errday. I’m still struggling to get into actual shows so I’ve been devouring documentary series. I sat through The Rachel Divide which gives more unnecessary spotlight on Rachel Dolezal and how she came to being self-proclaimed trans-racial. I dunno… Check it out if you care. I watched the whole thing. It’s obviously very well done but she still isn’t making any new supporters. The other goodie is RAPture which goes into the world of old and new rap superstars. I had no idea who Logic was until I was the first episode… he’s got a great story. Good TV. The others were We Speak Dance which looks at different dance styles from 6 different cities including Nigeria and My Next Guest Needs… (I can’t type that mess). Letterman chats to Jay-Z. Mr 4:44 is doing all the rounds. He knows a lot about a lot and he talks about everything.

Oh snap. So I discovered this really amazing animated Japanese show called Aggretsuko. It’s not for everyone but I watched the whole season in a single sitting. It follows this young accountant cat in the city who hates her job, hates how responsible she is and takes it all out on a microphone, screaming death metal at a karaoke bar and the bathroom stalls at her office. I know… How ridiculously good? Check it out!!

Listening:

Back on Destiny’s Child. I saw on my friend Neo’s instastory that ‘Survivor’ came out May 1st 2001! I spent my own coins to buy this album back then. 16 year old gay mess trying to sing lyrics to ‘Apple Pie a la Mode’ off the booklet as fast as Beyonce! The joys. My older brother then decided to steal my CD and take it to hostel where his whole boarding house had its way with my prized possession! Imagine. Anywho… I digress. Also listened to a bunch of dark pop from MUNA and Ashanti‘s ‘Concrete Rose’. Nothing new this week. Also if you’re on Spotify let’s follow each other. Making some deelish playlists and also need new music!!

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

So I’m not really going to be on the streets much but there are a bunch of things happening in Jozi this weekend. I swear more happens in Winter in this city. Like all on top of each other! I need to realign my ish so doing a yoga class led by my girl Banesa at the Village Bell in Linden. Come through to detox with me. R50 a class. Essential.

Sunday I’m thinking of doing the Pan African Rum Festival at the Neighbourgoods Market spot. If the weather is yummy I just might go. There is a tribute concert for Bra Hugh called ‘A Celebration of Hugh Masekela at Joburg Theatre that started yesterday. Sounds like a good Saturday evening sitch, there are some greats on the roster. One thing I’d love to go to but don’t think I’ll go to is the Sneaker Exchange event tomorrow at Fox Junction. It’s a pretty dope event that comes to a city (incl. Cape Town) annually where you can buy, sell or trade your own sneakers. I’ve seen some where you can paint, draw and rework your sneakers. OK I may have convinced myself. Alliance Francaise was one of the galleries I went to last night and they have an nice exhibit called  ‘Five Photographers: A Tribute To David Goldblatt‘. I didn’t know much about this world renowned South African photographer so it was great to see photographers he feels inspired by who capture the essence of survival which is a theme he gained fame from back in the 1950s apartheid SA. It’s on for the whole month. They have jam packed schedule so look out for some of their exhibitions this month which will include final year UJ students works.

Comment below. Invite me somewhere I wouldn’t know to go to. Will be sure to bookmark it! Have a good one!
