Jazz is not Lost
NSA Festival of the Arts
A few things have already started this past week but go on into the weekend. In Maboneng; The Bioscope has brought back (by popular demand) RBG a documentary film on Women’s Rights lawyer and cultural icon, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, POP Art premiered Mnquma – a one man personal journey in connecting with his cultural roots. The National School of Arts is halfway into it’s 2019 Festival of the Arts which is taking place at the school and at Joburg Theatre. A showcase of plays, dance, music and arts. Staying on schools, UJ Arts & Culture and It Has To Be Jazz is hosting its Jazz is not Lost evening of young jazz talents who are proving that the legacy and feeling of jazz is very much alive. [Fri, 8 Mar 7-10PM R150]
Urban Village is making it’s rounds in Joburg and I’m here for all of it. Tonight they are at Untitled Basement for an intimate live show. [Fri, 8 Mar 8PM R100]
All roads lead to Welgelegen Manor in Mpumalanga for the 2nd Bacardi Holiday Club – Beach Edition. 90% of the tickets which include drinks, food and camping spots for the whole weekend are sold – so I’m probably letting you know about this way too late, but if this has sparked your interest do check out the FB event to see what you could (or could not) be missing. I’m here, I’m queer
Jolburg is bringing a night of a queer expression and celebration through performance and music with I’m here, I’m queer Vol I. Lineup has not been confirmed yet, but if you’re a queer performer check out the link and get yourself added. [Sat, 9 Mar 7PM]
Eenblond Tours which hosts various food and cultural tours and walks through various neighbourhoods and areas in Jozi are having a Fordsburg Street Food, Art & History Tour tomorrow from Newtown into Fordsburg. Great way to meet new people and go on a safe guided tour through one of the city’s fave spots. [Sat, 9 Mar 11am-2:30PM R460pp]
Hazard Gallery at The Cosmopolitan are hosting multiple works one of which is from visual artist and photographer Ugo Woatzi. His work Chameleon looks at the spaces we exist in and try find meaning and happiness in besides the hetero-normative context. Alongside this will be a fashion experience with Buffer Magezine and Fashion is Art at The Cosmo. [Sat, 9 Mar 5PM-late]
Tha Cutt & Spindle bring performance DJ’ing to KCB on Saturday. Tha Cutt is known for his technical skills and Tablist is on it’s 3rd installment in putting this best foot forward with other turntable greats. For a more bluesy and jazz inspired evening pop into Radio Bantu’s Saucetones. Live instrumentation and roots music is the order of this event. Roving Bantu Kitchen will serve up the meals with this hearty event. [Sat, 9 Mar 8-11PM R100/R250 with dinner]

August House Art Affair
The FeelGoodSeries has a sister and it’s called Pantone Sundays. This fresh and colourful party hosted at Razor Charlie has been around since spring 2018 and sadly this is the last one before winter kicks in. This months theme is purple so be sure to dust off your royal colours and join them this Sunday. [Sun, 10 Mar 3-10PM R100 presold]
August House Gallery is hosting is popular Open Studio Art Affair. This event brings the pan-African urban artists’ closer to you so they profit directly from their creative works. Five storeys of unique and interesting art to view and buy. [Sun, 10 Mar 10:30AM-4PM]
So much art this weekend, but here’s a celebration of 18 years of it at Spaza Art Gallery this Sunday in Troyeville. R100 get’s you lunch, music and live performances at the gallery with some of Jozi’s best. [Sun, 10 Mar 12-6PM R100]
