Thank God it’s Fri-i-i-daaaay! Uhh! And thank God it’s sunny again! Goodnesss! So… starting the instagram page really was the best move for this series of the blog. It now has it’s own life and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. The direct interaction with interested peeps is so great and it feels like it has a place and feels so right for me. Thanks for the love and comments on the page. Upwards and onwards!

There are some new clubs in town!! Sadly they don’t have dark sultry lighting or dance floors, but they certainly have what we all need – food and laughter! Melville Comedy Club opened on 7th Street just over a month ago and just from their line-up I think they will bring a whole lot of fun. 50% off for legit students. How nice? The other club is Glory‘s weekly Ramen Club which is an intimate 3 course meal in a beautiful house setting. Bookings are essential, but I hear it’s so worth it. [Fri, 22 Feb 7pm]

Friday is full of great music events. Depending on what you’re into each one I’ve listed have completely different vibes by great artists. Diamond Thug and Bye Beneco are bringing dream pop, electronica and the visual stage performance they are known for to Snatch32 in Parkhurst tonight.  [Fri, 22 Feb 8pm]

My personal faves, Urban Village will be performing for the first time this year at Breezeblock, Brixton. These guys stays touring and bring such a fresh sound to traditional folk with Zulu sounds and Xhosa electric funk (which I honestly didn’t know was a thing but makes total sense). Not to be missed! [Fri, 22 Feb 7pm]

For a more mellow laid back sitch Artivist in Braamfontein hosts a weekly vinyl session, Mixtape Fridays, with various top DJs on Fridays from 6pm. Great for after work drinks and nibbles. [Fri, 22 Feb 6pm – late]

Get Saturday morning to a historic start with a walkabout tour at the Standard Bank Gallery in town. Today sees the launch of A Black Aesthetic exhibition which will go on for 2 months and open to all. This exhibition is said to be the largest collection of Black South African Artists since the dawn of our democracy. Amazing really. I’ll defs go see this and give you peak on the FOMOCam instagram stories. [Sat, 23 Feb 11am – 12pm]

If you don’t know the Feel Good Series you best know about it today! The mother of all Feel Goods is going down tomorrow at Victoria Yards. The first UMI Fest sees a line-up curated by fans of the party through votes on Instagram. What I love about this is that it’s not saturated with well-known, mostly male artists and DJs like you tend to see at most of these type of things. Expect to hear experiential sounds from great DJs, kwaito nostalgia from Darkie Fiction, afro-futuristic beats from rising star Muzi and Melo B’s sweet voice over slick lyrics. I’m obvs gonna be there – come say hi! [Sat, 23 Feb 3pm]

Joburg’s first Chinatown on 11 Commissioner Street will host their Chinese New Year in celebration of the Year of the Pig. The streets will be full of lights, displays of colour and huge fireworks from 9pm. 1Fox Junction and surrounding stores and restaurants will be open and sharing in the festivities. [Sat, 22 Feb 4pm – 11pm]

Haven’t found much happening on Sunday… yet! I will upload onto the FOMOFridaysJHB page as the weekend goes, be sure to follow and keep in touch. DM’s are always welcome if you need more info.

If you are not worn out from everything happening this weekend maybe a nice hike up and around Melville Koppies will be up your alley before brunch or lunch on Sunday. Starting from Marks Park Sports club this monthly hike is great for meeting new people and breaking a sweat while taking in the magnificent views and nature. [Sun, 23 Feb 8:0am]

Have a fab, fearless Friday and a bright and sunny weekend.

xo,

ALN.

I’m back! Not that I went anywhere… but this week was a toughie. Stayed off social media, never left the house except for work and was just unconcerned. Couldn’t even find a retrograding planet to blame all of this on. Lol. I’m sure I was people’d out shem. I’m good now. Let’s razzle!

Watching:

I recently discovered The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime Video after taking a break from Netflix. It’s so so good! Granted it’s another white show with white folk, but we’ll allow it. When I saw in the credits that ‎Amy Sherman-Palladino created and writes for the show it made ALL the sense. Fast talking, insane wit, great sets just like her first show Gilmore Girls. It’s my new show right now.

Besides TMMM I was watching Disney’s Mulan all week. I also don’t know. I wasn’t interested in watching humans until just last night. My girl Mulan held me down. Lol. What is everyone else watching? This is where having regular television wins. I’m missing all the SA shows. DSTV needs to come alive with making Showmax a more grown up streaming service.

Listening:

Teyana Taylor’s K.T.S.E. has been on CONSTANT repeat for me. At work, on commute, in the shower, in the kitchen. I am obsessed with her new album. I don’t know how I feel about these albums that only have 7 or 8 songs! I feel like this album was robbed of being a full bodied 12 track work of art. She is giving me old school R&B voice with old Kanye beats and great excerpts from classic hits. Love. I want a part II asap.

Drake is out. Scorpion literally dropped today. At first listen, I’m very much into it. It’s almost a coming together of his debut (lot less pop), ‘Take Care’ (lot less hip-hopping) and ‘Nothing Was Ever The Same’ (less features – but Jay-Z is back – yay!). There’s less ‘Views’ and ‘More Life’ vibes which I don’t hate. We have those in the bag. So far Emotionless is a fave (not just because of Mariah!).

My boos Darkie Fiction dropped their HOT lead single from their long awaited (according to me as their #1 fan) EP Sobabini. “Bhoza” has the nostalgic kwaito sound we all love and crave with Yoza’s beautifully odd vocals and Katt Daddy’s energetic rap. He’s honestly the best ad-libbing hypeman ever. “COME OOOON!” Best.

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

This weekend is insane! It reminds me of one weekend in October last year where I just couldn’t deal. I’m certainly going to try my best to make it to most events.

Tonight the main event is KoolOut’s 10 Year Birthday Celebration at The Good Luck Bar. These guys have been at it since their inception a decade ago in Cape Town and are just expanding and perfecting their formula. Tonight’s concert will have most of all the artist they have worked with including Rogue, Kwesta and Reason.

The first ever Vouge Nights Jozi will be held at JHB Hive tonight hunties. WOKE Arts and founder Lelo Meslani (a.ka. Lelo What’s Good) are all about creating safe and inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. Allies are obviously welcome (because intersectionality) but you best come correct. Come as any fishy, cunty version of yourself and let’s have some fun.

Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival – The Concert is on tomorrow from 10am at Constitutional Hill. The line up is out of control. I have never to be honest. Big ups to the organisers on this huge feat. R50 for entry. It’s peanuts for everything that’s on offer.

The Pantry Market at Keyes will be a nice little morning to midday sitch. Their winter edition will have all your comfort foods to help deal with this weather. Think breads, cheeses, soups, curries, chocolate, pies the whole lot. Go fill up before the streets claim your name.

It’s month end so you know Feel Good Series is back and this time around in a new venue – King Kong. I can’t say this venue without busting out in Nicki Minaj’s Chun-Li. It will get you too, watch. My super talented babycakes Leon is performing at 6pm tomorrow, so be sure to go check him out along with some new FGS DJs. Also jumping off is the Issa Vibe party just up the road at The Tennis Club. My boo thang Mx Blouse is bringing the groove we love and performing from around midnight. I done said this weekend is insane!

Sunday is JULY! Cancer season and my birth month. It’s also my big brothers birthdays. I don’t know how my mother managed with two cancerians to be honest. Kool Out is hosting their monthly party, Koolin In The City at a rooftop venue – Elevate in Marshalltown. I’m going just to check this chic venue out to be honest. This one is dubbed the DJ edition so you know Akio & P-Kuttah are gonna hold it down with some of Jozi’s top spinners.

There are plenty of markets to check out for a more chill vibe. Sunday Best Selects is back again at Breezeblock from 3pm. Victoria Yards is having their Open Studio Vibes on Sunday. I’ve been once before and it was a great discovery of artisanal jewelry, furniture, artwork and clothing. Check out my post on it here. I totally forgot that The Incredibles 2 is out in cinemas so that’s another alternative, but I cannot with cinemas on weekends. The winter sun is too deelish. I’ll bookmark Edna and the gang for next week.

Whatever you’re doing, have a good one. Hope to see you on some dancefloors because this weekend has a lot of party, music and culture in store.

Happy Friday ❤

I’m on my way to Swaziland to bring my fire and frolic among the hills and mountains of Ezulwini Valley. Bushfire 2018 is finally here. I was such an Eager Esther that I got early-bird tickets last year already (just as well, it’s completely sold out!). A few weeks back I wasn’t sure I was ready to get back into a tent after spending 5 days in one in the desert, but I’m ready to do it all over again with a new vibe. Being a festival kween I invested in a camper bed – it’s just a blow up on a 3 foot stretcher. A small luxury really. Now all I need are some side tables with drawers. 😀

I’ll give you the full run down when I get back. For now back to addressing the FOMO of it all. I’ll be across the border when this gets published, but let me share some events I’m bummed to be missing out on. This weekend is L-I-T in Joburg!

Watching:

This week was all about the Billboard Music Awards for me. I’m not a Royalist nor have I watched Suits so my inake of the Royal Wedding was limited to tweets, instastories and Facebook feeds. I sure loved how there were black folk being great all up in there. Get it Meghan.

The BBMAs were on Monday morning here and the first thing I woke up to was Normani doing that triple twirl hair flipping drop into an ass up up semi split!! She is not here to play with no one!! Bye Fifth Harmony! Fave. Kelly Clarkson’s voice is bananas. K-Pop is clearly a global thing. Xtina and Demi were shouting – love the song though. Dua Lipa needs some energy injected into her and Janet Jackson is G.O.A.T. I only really cared for the performances and some acceptance speeches. Oh… Taylor Swift is the Anne Hathaway of music. Really great gal, super talented and sweet but ya.

I obvs got sucked into a documentary again. This time by this 2015 doccie about the prison sentence that is Scientology. It’s nuts! Started by one man, made to be a religion to avoid taxes and snatch up money from it’s followers. All I knew about it was Tom Cruise and John Travolta but it’s so dark and sinister. Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is on Netflix (I really need to check out other tv sources). Other than that I haven’t seen anything new new. Kimmy and Tituss are back and trying to adult May 30th, so that’s gonna be a crazy treat.

Listening:

Like doccies, I’m hooked on podcasts now. I can’t wait until they become a real thing in South Africa and the continent. Or maybe I’m just behind the times and American culture is saturating everything in sight. Tell me please!! I did find that Lady Skollie has (or had) a podcast called Kiss & Tell out and a few others focusing on hip-hop culture and comedians. I use CastBox for my podcasts, but there are a ton of other players. Sound Africa released a new one this week titled “Freedom For Sale“. I love how they used a Superbalist style sales banner for this episode. It looks at the major events of corruption surrounding the arms deals’ from during the apartheid era up until now with state capture and Zupta. Very well produced and edited. Ooh Ayiba Magazine has a list of African podcasts you can check out here that I just found while typing this.

Music wise I discovered Noñameko’s Goddess Vol. 1 on Sunday. A friend posted it on FB as a seven colours “playlist”. It’s so good. Perfect for an easy Sunday. Jazzy with all the right trimmings of soul. I need to delve into her earlier offerings, I really like her vibe.

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

Like I said earlier. Joburg is doing the most this weekend. I tried to cover a mix of cool parties, foodie vibes, and the arts. Anything else I’m sure you’ll pick up along the way. I really only look for things myself or my friends are interested in. Do share if you have other things out of my radar.

So Glory vanished without so much of a goodbye. I know some of you knew and went to their last hoorah but I knew nada. Anyway, they are bringing their delicious Asian streetfood menu to Breezeblock tomorrow in Brixton. Damn I miss that chicken.

There is a special screening/exhibition at Hazard Gallery all weekend (25-27) of a dance film by Thami Majela called A Last One In Color. This one is right up my alley. I’m all about dance films with artistic expression. I hope they show it again at some point. Bioscope please tu.

Tariro Foundation, which was started last year by a group of young exceptional young womxn are hosting an imbizo looking at the topic “Exploring contemporary barriers to success for African women and how they can be overcome” is at Allan Gray tomorrow. It will have various speakers on the panel including newly appointed chancellor of Nelson Mandela University, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi. I really hope they do a Facebook Live for this one to reach those who can’t get there.

Feel Good Series is back again. My second favourite party in Joburg (after P_party of course) will be at Dorkay for its 10th installment tomorrow. I feel like I don’t have to tell you much, but go! It’s always guaranteed fun and the city views are a bonus. The Tennis Club is hosting A Night of Talented Womxn for the second time in Joburg tonight. Diverse local and now international musical talents will be doing their thang. Live performances and DJs from the best. Another monthly rooftop fave Koolin’ In The City is sure to tear it up for a Sunday vibe at 77 Commissioner. Expect drinks specials, daytime games like 30 Seconds and music from Jozi’s finest.

I wasn’t kidding when I said it’s going down. Month end madness. Make sure you dress warm, the sun we’re getting now is essentially just for light. All events have links for tickets, times and venues. My treat.

Have the best weekend lovelies!
