#FOMOFridays

Wowza. I haven’t done one of these in like a month. Haven’t had much fomo since turning a year older, but now that Spring (a.k.a Summer) is basically here it’s warmer and there will be a ton of delicious (see what I did here) things to get up to. All the shows to binge which are starting new seasons and new and old music which is always popping no matter what time of year.

Ding-dong, the old winter is dead!

Watching:

Most NB thing on my TV (well really laptop screen – but whatevs) this week is Insecure Season 3!!! I gobbled up episode 1 as soon as I knew it was out. Thanks to everyone who had it on blast on their instastories, I totally forgot it was coming out this week. If you’re a fan, go watch! Always good. I just want Kelly tbh!

Succession just came onto Showmax. It’s a HBO show which always promises raw drama. I watched the first episode. Good premise on a family business empire is to be handed down to one of 3 children. You think you know who it will be but it looks like it’s going to be a messy family feud to the throne. It’s a 1 ep a week one for me.

Doja Cat was a viral hit this week with her “Mooo!” video. “Got milk, bitch? Got beef?” I died!! She made the whole thing in her room in front of a green screen. Now we know about her, so good on her. I’m gonna look for her music for sure now.

Listening:

I’ve been all up on Super Soul Conversations podcast this week. Out of the 3 that came out recently I was devved by the one with Panache Desai where he and Mama O talk about Discovering Your Soul Signature. Desai is considered a spiritual teacher and in this particular episode he goes into the transformative power of energy, understanding emotino

My #1 homegirl Nicki Minaj finally dropped Queen last week. It’s been my bread and butter this week. It’s also fun for working out or running to. Personally I’m not crazy about long albums with unnecessary tracks and this one is full of them. Obvs Nicki’s lyricism and word play comes through and so does Roman at the end of on one of my fave tracks on the album, Barbie Dreams.

I mentioned Darkie Fiction’s Sobabini EP two weeks back when it came out. After they shut down Oppikoppi over the long weekend I had to go back and for another fix. It really easy one of the best SA releases this year, no lies. Every track is a winner shem.

Our fave My Little Pony songstress, Ariana Grande, released her fourth album Sweetener literally a few hours ago. I haven’t properly dug into it because of Friday meetings, yawn! But from what she’s put out as singles, I’m very into it. Pop will always be my fave so…

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

The Color Purple Musical is back at Joburg Theatre from tonight. I’m sure by popular demand because it was so very good when I saw it back in February. Looks like a 3 week run, so if you missed it or need a rewatch – do it to it.

Bioscope Cinema is hosting its #BigNightIn pyjama party tonight with all you can eat pizza and all sorts of other yummy treats from Manhattan Sweets .  No plans? Maybe grab a friend and check it out. Sounds hella cute. From tomorrow night they are showing a special screening of ‘Goldblatt’: A Documentary, a doccie on South African photography legend David Goldblatt who passed away this year. Definitely keen for a midweek viewing of this one. Bookmarked!

Art & Design Saturday at Keyes is happening as it does every month, this time they are focusing on ‘How Womxn Lead’. Looks like there will be discussions, panels, art and performances by fierce womxn who have created their own success in the art and design world.

For a bit of a jiggle and razzle to some amazing R&B-Soul, Funk and Hip-Hop vibes; Spindle Online DJ Magazine has Cuttaways tomorrow night at The Cosmopolitan in Maboneng. Great DJs at a dope venue.

For a young Sunday wine down (*wink wink*) La Bouqeira is having what looks like it’s first ‘Wine Party In Parktown North’. 1 ticket = wine tastings, tapas all over the show and some Sunday jazz vibes. Sounds amaze. We’ll see. Y’all know that wine goes all the way in then next thing you’re at Rockets Bryanston. Pause.

Anywho, have THE most amazing warm weekend. Knowing August we’re definitely going to get a young icy breeze before the month’s over. Hope not!

Is it me or do things pop off during Winter in this city? Also shout out to the solstice. We’re halfway through gang. Here’s to longer days and less darkness. No but seriously, there are ALL the activations and ALL the events happening ALL at once. I actually cannot! I mean I can… but like wooo shem! Or maybe it was just this week? Either way Jozi is doing the most don’t get left behind. Ok now I’m rambling…

Leggo!

Watching:

Only thing I managed to watch in this busy ass week was Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Always a good easy watch for constant chuckles. Titus Andromedon is my favourite character on television right now. The outrageous levels of this show are kind of aspirational, especially in the episode I watched recently about white privilege. Amazing mess!

OTR II has been all over my instastories. I naturally fell into a YouTube rabbit hole of most of the performances by Bey and her bae. That stage is BANANAS. Apesh*t video is even more bananas. Like how do you just go take over the Louvre?!

Coconut Kelz is back with a new video. This time she pokes fun at Sashi Naidoo and her comments on Palestine – awks, and the lady who was kicked out of a Kulula flight for using that word. Smh. Go have a laugh over here.

Listening:

3 words. EVERYTHING IS LOVE. Full stop end of sentence. The Carters stay coming for our edges and we stay sipping their kool-aid. I’ve given the album about four listens. I have my faves. I just want more singles so I can get more videos from these two. Their visuals are always on point.

Christina made the mistake of releasing her album on the same weekend as The Carters. To be fair she had no clue. I’d be haaaaacked! Really interested to see the first week numbers because her album Liberation is really good. Some old Xtina, her deep ballads and some new current alternative sounds with great features. Worth a listen.

My girl Nicki Minaj on the other hand was touched by an angel and moved her June 15 release to August 10. Obvs that angel is her homegirl Beyonce! Lol. Love her songs with Ariana, ‘Bed’ and ‘The Light Is Coming’. Nothing new on Nicki’s Bed – island gyal vibes, but Ariana’s track is fire! It kind of has that NERD ‘Lemon’ hyper beat I dig.

Doing (Weekend Tingz):

Friday I have a friends 30th hangout so will probs be at that all night. But La Santa in Melville is having a funeral for Kanye West called 808’s & Heartbreaks. Apparently it’s going to be all the PRE – slavery was a choice, Trump loving Kanye music. I love me some ANG so I trust they will turn it all the way out with a good mixture. It’s not going to be all Kanye, don’t stress. Dress in black!

The Bioscope is hosting The Other Peoples’ Film Festival this weekend. This fest is in recognition to World Refugee Day that was 2 days ago. It will showcase films from other parts of the world with seemingly different by the same realities we all face. Maybe in contradiction to this, Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank will have the annual European Film Festival running from today until July 1st. Expect award-winning foreign language films from independent film house you probably haven’t heard of. 2019 Oscar nominees amongst these for sure.

Rosebank Sunday Market has the Car Boot Sale event they have every last Sunday of the month. Vintage clothes, antiques and great food stalls. I haven’t been to the Rosebank Market in ages. Might pop into this one before I get into a really busy Sunday of farewells and new chillout spots.

What’s sure to be a fave series for the rest of the season is Sunday Best Selects. A 6 week residency at the super cute Breezblock in Brixton. Sunshine, laughter, calm energies and a whole lot of bubbles over some good wavy music. Find me there for a wind down.

I’m looking forward to a mixed weekend of fun, hugs and a dose of chill. The days are slowly getting longer from now on so let’s enjoy em!

Happy Friday ❤
